The diptych artwork continues Sunil's distinctive exploration of overcoming adversity, presenting a heroic portrayal of strength, resilience, and fortitude. It draws parallels between the classic pugilistic stance and the everyday battles of survival that we all face.
The title, 'Queensberry Rockers' is manifested from the term 'Queensberry Rules' referring to the 1865 code of conduct and fair-play standards that established the foundations of modern boxing. Themes of discipline, integrity, and fair play are brought to the fore.
A Suprematist-inspired composition lends heightened tenacity to the human figure, with strong diagonal tilts introducing energy and a non-objective structure. These dynamic slants create visual tension, guiding the viewer's eye through the composition and reinforcing a sense of movement.
The richly worked surface bears the traces of both construction and removal, combining acrylic paint, spray paint, and Italian Luresa silver leaf. Scraped textures and overpainted marks reveal the passage of time and the artist's process, allowing each stage of the painting's evolution to remain visible rather than concealed.Acrylic and spray paint with Italian Luresa silver leaf on deep-edge canvas
